The struggle to find a clean plant-based milk is real.

I was hit by this reality when I was dutifully comparing two different almond milks at the store. One, I had been innocently drinking for several months, fooled by the package promising it was super good for me.

Like your desperate-for-approval coworker, this almond milk was telling me what I wanted to hear: no soy, no dairy, no carrageenan, no GMOs. It’s vegan. It’s Kosher. It’s unsweetened.

Oh, and it’s got natural flavors.

What the hell? 

The second selection I had purchased a couple times when it was on sale. Don’t know about you, but $6 for 32 ounces seems a bit steep. I want to eat plants not lose my pants to eating plants.

Enter BOGO, and I’m sold.

This one, too, was all the things I want in my non-dairy milk: dairy free (obvs), gluten free, Kosher, lactose free, non-GMO, and vegan.

Oh, and it’s got natural flavors.

I’m not trying to be a pain in the ass, really, but we’ve talked about natural flavors.

While they’re technically natural, there’s a technicality at play. The flavor is natural, but anywhere from 50 to 100 different components can go in to that flavor.

This is where your preservatives and other no-goods are hiding a lot of the time.

So while you might look at that label and see four ingredients (let’s say, water, almonds, sea salt, natural flavors) that could actually translate to 54 to 104 ingredients!

If you’ve got a sensitive gut like yours truly (and I’m betting you do on some level, thanks to all our chemicals and processing and antibiotics) and you try your best to do your due diligence so your digestion doesn’t suck, this little hide-and-seek makes life pretty damn tough.

Don’t you worry. I’ve got something for you today that’s going to make life a little better.
